What's Happening in Room 204?
Math: We are wrapping up our decimal computation unit! Students have learned how to multiply and divide using decimal and whole numbers. We have also been practicing how to identify which operation to use using key words in multi-step word problems. As this is a concept that involves a lot of brain power and use of math strategies, please practice at home! Our Decimals Test will be on Thursday, February 24 and Friday, February 25.
Social Studies: Students have started working on applying the 5 Themes of Geography to the West Region of the United States. Our West Test will be Wednesday, March 1. Please practice states and capitals as well as locations of the states at home! Students will also be allowed some time to work on their scrapbooks in class. Ask your child about these fun and creative projects!
Science: We have just begun our unit on Geology! We have learned about the layers and the Earth, and have begun talking about Platetectonics, and how the plates of the crust move. Thank you for reviewing these concepts at home!
Writing: We just started our unit on Persuasive essays. We are comparing the organization to an OREO. Your students can practice this at home by giving very good reasons for the things they want each day! We will be starting to practice our persuading skills next week by doing a debate on the positive and negative effects of the Gold Rush on the United States.
Reading: Students have spent the last couple of weeks learning about point of view and perspective of stories. We are finishing up the book Wonder, which tells a story from many different character's perspectives. We have had many great class discussions around this book on themes that include kindness, and not judging a book by it's cover.
